CLINICS

GUEST ARTIST JAZZ BAND CLINICS

Getting the rhythm section to really swing

Getting the band to develop a solid swing feel is vital. Each member of the rhythm section has a unique role in the band and their placement of all of the rhythms in every subdivision of the beat must compliment the style.

Developing solid time throughout the band

It's everybody's job to have solid time. This means everyone needs to focus practicing in time, not just the rhythm section.

Introduction to Jazz Improvisation

This session starts with learning simple riff based and vocabulary based blues licks. It also covers basic chord/scale relationships, pentatonics, and the blues scale. A more advanced Jazz Improvisation session is also available.

GUEST ARTIST TROMBONE CLINICS

Advanced jazz/Trombone Visualizer

This covers Mr. Hicks method of visualizing the trombone and the way the chords interact with the intricate shapes of the trombone harmonic series.

Developing a good daily routine

It's vital as a brass player to develop good habits on the horn. in order to do so, you must have a consistent routine that covers fundamentals and embouchure technique.

Doodle Tonguing for the trombone

Many trombonists can't figure out how to navigate the horn at high speeds. The Doodle technique allows trombonists to not only get around more quickly but with a better swinging jazz articulation than the traditional double tongue.

"Kevin Hicks is not only an amazing performer, he is also an excellent educator. He was a guest artist/clinician for Washburn University's 2016 Trombonopolis event. The students and fellow faculty were very impressed with his playing. I overheard a high school attendee saying that they were really excited to get back to their jazz band program and share what they learned during his clinic. Mr. Hicks was able to cater his discussions to ages ranging from 5th grade to college senior. "
